With only a handful of seconds on the game clock standing between him and immortality, Detroit Mercy star Antoine Davis launched a 3-pointer.
But Davis, who had been cold all game, missed as time expired, and Pete Maravich's NCAA Division I career scoring mark of 3,667 points was preserved in Youngstown State 71-66 win over Detroit Mercy in a Horizon League tournament quarterfinal matchup on Thursday.
Davis, the fifth-year star who entered Thursday's game needing 26 points to surpass Maravich, finished with 22 in the loss. Afterward, he said he feels good about his career and his choice to return to Detroit Mercy, where his father, Mike Davis, is head coach.
Davis had hoped to not only break Maravich's record this season but also lead his team to its first NCAA tournament appearance in more than a decade.
"Just special," Davis said about his career at Detroit Mercy. "I had the opportunity to play for my dad. I was a couple of points short of the record. God knows what he's doing."
But is Davis' college career over?
After the loss, both Davis and his father said they would welcome an invitation to the College Basketball InvitationaI or another postseason tournament, which would potentially allow Davis to continue his pursuit of Maravich's record. The Titans finished 14-19 overall and 9-11 in Horizon League play, so there are no guarantees they would secure an invite.
But the CBI selects teams from the pool of schools that don't get picked for the NCAA tournament or the NIT. A program with a sub-.500 record is still eligible to be selected. But all CBI entrants must pay a $50,000 fee.
"The NCAA tournament is the goal," Antoine Davis said after the loss on Thursday. "I wouldn't have a problem with [the CBI]. I'm sure none of my teammates would have a problem with it."
Mike Davis said if a postseason tournament gives Detroit Mercy the opportunity to play another game, he would consult his team about it.
"If they want to play, we'll play," the elder Davis said. "If they don't want to play and it's time to move on, we won't play."
Antoine Davis said he didn't feel any pressure entering Thursday's game. Even when the final shot left his hands, he said he was thinking about moving forward in the league tournament.
"I saw that I was really close and I had a chance [to tie the record], but I was more worried about us winning the game than anything," he told ESPN.
Davis had faced scrutiny for the way he pursued the record. He played in 144 games and five seasons compared with three seasons and 83 games for Maravich, who didn't play with a 3-point line. But Davis also said he respects Maravich's mark.
Youngstown State seemed determined to prevent Davis from making history at its expense. He got trapped on most of his team's possessions, as Youngstown State tried to force him into tough looks. Davis finished 7-for-26 from the field, including 4-for-16 from the 3-point line. He said he expected that pressure on Thursday.
"Nobody in the country can guard me one-on-one and that's been proven," Davis told ESPN after the game. "I can't be mad about it. If I had someone like me on their team, I'd have done the same thing. That's the game plan at the end of the day."
Now, Davis will possibly end his career just shy of Maravich's record.
Mike Davis said both Maravich and his son achieved something special in college basketball.
People would have put an asterisk by his name if he would've broken [the record]," Mike Davis said after the game. "Pistol Pete was in a world of his own and there will never be another Pistol Pete in college basketball. I think there will never be another Antoine the way he scored in 144 consecutive games."
If he doesn't get another opportunity to play, Antoine Davis said he would be proud of the way he and his team competed throughout his career. Even though he didn't match or pass Maravich's record, he said he is happy with what he has accomplished.
Said Davis: "I'm thankful to even be in the same boat as Pistol Pete."

Played nearly double the games Maravich did

Kind of fitting he came up short
Pete would have had 13 points more per game with a 3 point line,

Amazing [thing] about Pete is … 44 points per game, in his career, for three straight years in an era with no 3-point line. Dale Brown, who coached LSU after Press and Pete were there, went back and charted all the games with the running score – Maravich free-throw, Maravich 22-foot jumper, Maravich lay-up – and he calculated that with the current college 3-point line rule at 19’9” Pete Maravich would have averaged 13 3-point makes per game, which would have given him a career average of 57.0 points per game under today’s rules! That guy was UN-BE-LIEVABLE! We love him, we miss him terribly, what a great man, what a great human being.”

At least a few more people will discover one of the greatest basketball players of all time and a guy waited about 20 years for other players to catch up.

And if there actually was a 3 point line back then he probably would have had more then 13 a game because he probably would have attempted more shots from beyond 19.9 due to the added incentive of the extra point

This guy played 5 years and Pete only played 3

Davis is damned if he does and damned if he doesnt.

If he breaks the record, everybody is going to hate on him for the reasons explained in the posts above

DETROIT MERCY CAN PAY FOR ANOTHER SHOT AT PETE MARAVICH RECORD – $27,500 TO COLLEGE BASKETBALL INVITATIONAL.

What price fame?
Oh, about $27,500.
Make that check payable to: the College Basketball Invitational. They take everybody, including 14-19 Detroit Mercy that has lost three of its last four and finished eighth in the Horizon League at 9-11.
The CBI is considering inviting Detroit Mercy, which was eliminated from the Horizon League Tournament by No. 1 seed Youngstown State, 71-66, in Youngstown, Ohio, on Thursday night.
But Detroit Mercy is not your typical sub-.500 team, though it is also not even a hot team. It has lost three of its last four games.
But what Detroit Mercy has is more than a prayer. It has the second leading career scorer in college basketball history in guard Antoine Davis, who has scored 3,664 points in his five seasons as a Titan.
Iconic basketball magician guard Pistol Pete Maravich scored 3,667 in his three seasons from 1967-70 at LSU. The Tigers reached the National Invitation Tournament final four in New York City in 1970 and finished 22-10 – 13-5 in the Southeastern Conference for second place to then-No. 1 Kentucky.
“We do take teams that are below .500, depending on the circumstances,” CBI director Rick Giles told OutKick on Friday afternoon. “Not every year, but we have for different reasons. We have invited Power Five teams known for their fan base and tradition and teams with star players. We want a competitive tournament but also one that generates fan interest.”

Antonio Davis Is Clearly A Draw

Davis drew 5,584 on Thursday night to Youngstown State’s Beeghly Center – its largest crowd in a decade. He also had much to do with a fight between Detroit Mercer and Youngstown State after the game as he trash talked throughout the game. So, there’s that for even more interest – you know, like hockey.
If an invitee to the tournament can come up with the $27,500, it is in. The 16-team tournament is held at the Ocean Center arena in Dayton Beach, Florida, from March 18-22. The field will be announced after the NCAA Tournament’s Selection Sunday and the NIT’s selections on March 19. Since Detroit Mercy does not have a prayer for either of those, its entry into the CBI could come very soon.
Detroit Mercy is a private Roman Catholic school of 5,000 students that is a low-major college basketball program. So, pass that collection plate!
Davis scored 22 points in the Titans’ loss Thursday night – just four short of breaking Maravich’s record. So, the CBI and Detroit Mercy can be a part of history in the opening minutes of the game. It would be like watching the Kentucky Derby – instant gratification. And maybe the revolution will be televised on ESPN.
All CBI statistics count toward NCAA records, NCAA director of Media Coordination and Statistics David Worlock confirmed to OutKick on Friday afternoon. So if Davis scores four, he breaks Maravich’s mark.

ANTOINE DAVIS COULD BE THE NEXT ROGER MARIS

“I was a couple of points short of the record,” Davis said after the game. “I saw that I was really close, and I had a chance to tie. But I was more worried about us winning the game than anything.”
With the win, Youngstown State (24-8) advanced to the Horizon League Tournament semifinals on Monday. With two more wins, it reaches the NCAA Tournament with the Horizon’s automatic bid.
“The NCAA Tournament was the goal,” Davis said. “I wouldn’t have a problem with it (the CBI tournament). I’m sure none of my teammates would have a problem with it.”

Detroit Mercy coach Mike Davis, who is Antoine’s father and the former Indiana coach who took the Hoosiers to the Final Four in 2002 after Bobby Knight’s firing, would like another game.

Antoine Davis Missed A Three To Tie Record Near The Buzzer

“If they want to play, we’ll play,” Davis said. “If they don’t want to play, and it’s time to move on, we won’t play.”
Davis finished 7-of-26 from the field in the loss to Youngstown State and missed 12 of 16 from three-point range. He played on after injuring his shoulder in a fall with 8:02 to play. With four seconds left, he missed a meaningless three-pointer as far as the game’s outcome. But it would have tied Maravich’s record at 3,667.
“People would have put an asterisk by his name if he would’ve broken it,” Davis’ dad said. “Pistol Pete was in a world of his own, and there will never be another Pistol Pete in college basketball.”
